NeighborCircle Training in Chicago Starts Today

Today, LCW staff Alma Couverthie and Bill Traynor and Member Maria Betances started NeighborCircle Training on the South Side of Chicago with about 30 staff and residents of OakWood Shores, a HOPE VI development by The Community Builders (TCB).

LCW began a partnership with TCB this past Fall, connected to the developer’s new initiative called “Ways and Means” an effort to connect residents of thier developments to family asset building opportunities and enriched community building efforts. TCB took an interest in LCW’s Network Organizing approach and aspects of our practice such as NeighborCircles.

Oakwood Shores is partially complete and as resident move in — some moving back to the same area that they had to move out of when the public housing complexes were demolished – there is an opportunity and a challenge to build a new functional mixed income community. Staff and residents like the NeighborCircle approach because it is explicitly focused on helping neighbors meet and get to know each other at the door to door level.
